The short version

What mobile patrol security services actually involves

Mobile patrol is the most cost-effective security product we sell, and also the easiest one to buy badly. Done properly it puts a marked vehicle and a licensed officer on your property several times a night at times nobody can predict, with a time-stamped record of every visit.

Done badly it is a van that drives past at the same three times every night, logs nothing useful, and gives you a false sense that the site is covered. The difference costs the same. The only thing separating them is whether the provider randomises the schedule and proves the attendance.

It suits sites that are empty overnight and sites too small to justify a full post: yards, vacant units, small plazas, townhome complexes, self-storage, church and school properties, and portfolios where one officer can reasonably cover several addresses in a night.

Patrol routes run nightly across Hamilton and the surrounding municipalities — Stoney Creek, Ancaster, Dundas, Burlington, Grimsby, St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Welland, Brantford, Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo.

How to check your patrol provider

What proof of attendance should actually look like

If your current provider cannot show you these four things for last night, you are paying for coverage you cannot verify. This is the standard to hold anyone to, us included.

A time stamp per visit, not per night

You should be able to see each individual attendance, at the minute it happened, not a summary saying the site was checked.

Arrival and departure, not a tick

The record should show when the officer arrived and when they left. A tick on a sheet proves only that somebody ticked it.

Checkpoint tags from inside the property

Electronic tags at named points prove the officer walked the site rather than looked at it from the road.

Intervals that are visibly irregular

Read a week of your own reports. If the visit times cluster around the same hours, the schedule is predictable and so is the gap.

The real risks

What patrol is there to catch

Every sector has its own failure modes. These are the ones that come up repeatedly on the sites we cover, and what each one needs in response.

Predictable coverage gaps

A patrol on a fixed timetable tells anyone watching exactly how long they have. Randomisation is the entire value of the service.

Overnight entry to empty premises

The window between last staff out and first staff in is when almost all commercial break-ins occur.

Encampments and squatting

Vacant buildings and quiet lots. Far easier and less contentious to address at day two than at week six.

Alarm activations nobody attends

Key-holders stop driving in after the third false alarm. That is when the real one happens.

Unreported faults

Failed lighting, propped doors and damaged fencing go unnoticed for weeks at unattended sites. A patrol catches them on the first pass.

Coverage options

Patrol service options

Most sites do not need the most expensive option. Work out which of these describes your situation and the conversation gets much shorter.

Randomised nightly checks

An agreed number of documented attendances per night at irregular intervals, each time stamped.

Best for: Yards, plazas, vacant units, small commercial sites

Alarm response attendance

Officer dispatched on activation to verify the cause, so your staff are not the ones driving in at 3 a.m.

Best for: Any site with a monitored alarm

Lock-up and unlock service

Scheduled attendance to secure a property at close and open it at start of business.

Best for: Retail plazas, community facilities, multi-tenant buildings

Multi-site portfolio route

One officer covering several of your addresses across a shift, each with its own attendance record.

Best for: Property managers and multi-location businesses

Behind the uniform

A patrol route, start to finish

Good security is mostly quiet and mostly routine — that is the point. Here is the shift, start to finish, so you know exactly what you are paying for.

  1. 20:00

    Route built for the night

Attendance windows for every site on the route are generated fresh. No two nights run the same sequence.

  2. First check

    Full exterior circuit

Officer parks, walks the property rather than driving past, and tags each checkpoint electronically.

  3. Each visit

    Doors, gates, lighting, vehicles

Anything out of place is photographed at the time and attached to that visit’s record.

  4. On activation

    Alarm attendance

Diverted to the activation, cause verified, police contacted where warranted, client notified the same night.

  5. Final check

    Pre-dawn pass

The last attendance sits in the hours just before first light, statistically the most exposed part of the night.

  6. 07:00

    Attendance report

Every visit with its time stamp, checkpoint tags and any photographs, in your inbox.

Straight answer on price

What mobile patrol security services cost in Ontario

Most security sites will not put a number anywhere. Here is the honest range, and what would move your quote within it.

Typical 2026 Ontario range Quoted per documented check

Mobile patrol is not priced hourly. Cost depends on the number of attendances per night, how long each check takes, and where the site sits on the route. For most sites this lands well below the cost of a static post while covering the hours that matter.

These figures are a planning guide drawn from published Ontario market rates for licensed, insured, WSIB-covered personnel — not a quote. A price well below the band usually means someone is economising on wages, insurance or supervision, and that exposure transfers to you rather than staying with them.

Compliance framework

The rules this service operates under

Security in Ontario is regulated, and the specific legislation differs by sector. These are the ones that shape how this post is run.

Private Security and Investigative Services Act

Licensing for the agency and every officer, plus the marking requirements that apply to security vehicles in Ontario.

Highway Traffic Act

Patrol vehicles are fully insured, road-legal and marked. Officers drive them as ordinary road users with no special authority.

Trespass to Property Act

The basis on which an officer can require someone to leave your property, and how that notice is documented for a repeat visit.

PIPEDA

Patrol logs and photographs are retained and released to you under a defined retention policy.

Before you call

Five minutes of prep gets you a real quote instead of a range

We can give you a considered number on the first call if you have these to hand. If you do not, that is fine too — we will walk the site with you and work it out together.

  • Site address, and whether the officer can access the full perimeter
  • How many checks a night you want, and over which hours
  • Whether you also want alarm response attendance
  • Gate codes, key access, and who holds them today
  • Other properties you manage — routes price better together
Common questions

Questions we get asked about mobile patrol security services

Straight answers on licensing, deployment timing and how the contract actually works.

How do I know the patrol guard actually visited my property?

Our officers scan checkpoints on your property with a patrol wand, so each visit is recorded with its time. Anything out of place is photographed and added to that visit’s record. The report is emailed directly to you, so you can read the visit times for yourself.

What is your average response time for security alarms in Hamilton?

StandBy Security dispatches mobile patrol and alarm response from its Hamilton operations desk to Hamilton, Burlington and surrounding communities. Urgent call-outs are typically attended within 1 to 2 hours, subject to location and availability.

Can mobile patrol guards open and lock our facility daily?

Yes. We routinely provide scheduled opening and lock-up services. Guards arrive at specified times, disarm alarms, unlock main doors, and return at night to perform interior floor sweeps, verify windows, arm the system, and secure exterior gates.

How many patrol checks do we need each night?

Most sites start with a few visits a night, placed in the hours when the property is empty. The right number depends on what is stored there, how large the property is and your incident history. We agree the number with you and vary the times, so nobody watching can work out when the gaps are.

Will a patrol stop a break-in between visits?

Not reliably. Between visits, nobody is on your property. A patrol deters planned entry and finds problems quickly, but if your risk is something that takes four minutes, it may happen between checks. In that case a static guard is the better fit, and we will tell you so.

How is mobile patrol priced?

Per documented check, not by the hour. The cost depends on how many visits you want each night, how long each check takes and where your site sits on the route. Adding other properties you manage usually brings the price down.

Do you need keys or gate codes for our property?

If the officer needs to get behind a gate or inside a building, yes. Tell us who holds them today and we will agree how they are handed over and who is called if something changes. If you only want an exterior check, make sure the officer can reach the full perimeter.

Can a patrol help with a vacant building or squatters?

Yes. Regular visits make it easier to deal with an encampment or squatting early, which is simpler at day two than at week six. With your authorization, an officer can direct people to leave under the Trespass to Property Act, and will photograph what they find, report it to you and call police where needed.
