Who we are

Standby Security Services Inc. is a private security agency licensed by Ontario’s Ministry of the Solicitor General under the Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005. Our agency licence number is 30000322. You can look it up on the province’s public registry, and we would rather you checked than took our word for it.

We run the business from a single office in Hamilton. Scheduling, dispatch and supervision all happen there, and every guard is dispatched from there. There are no branch offices. A property manager calling about a site in Kitchener reaches the same desk as a client in downtown Hamilton, and the same people answer for the work.

What we do

We put licensed people on properties that need someone watching them. Most of the work falls into four groups. The full list is on our security services page.

Guards on site

A licensed guard posted at your property for the hours you set, on foot and at the door.

Front of house

Staff at the lobby desk of a condo or office building who know the residents, the tenants and the rules.

Mobile patrol

Marked vehicle patrols with scheduled stops, lock-ups and alarm response, for sites that do not need a guard all night.

Short-notice cover

Fire watch while a fire alarm or sprinkler system is out of service, event security, and short-term contracts while your own staff are away.

Where we work

Our guards travel from Hamilton to 13 communities across four regions. Distance changes how fast we can start, not whether we can.

Each community has its own page with local details, and all of them are on our locations page.

  • Urgent: typically 1 to 2 hours
  • Ongoing post: 24 to 48 hours

How we choose and supervise guards

Every guard holds an individual Ontario security guard licence. Getting one takes at least 40 hours of approved training, a provincial test and a criminal record check. That is the legal minimum, so before a first shift with us a guard also goes through four steps.

  1. Licence lookup

We check the licence on the public registry instead of trusting a photocopy.

  2. In-person interview

We meet every guard before hiring, and listen to how they handle a hard conversation.

  3. Reference calls

We speak to previous employers or references about reliability and conduct.

  4. Our own police check

A police or vulnerable sector check of our own, separate from the one done at licensing.

Before working a new site, the guard walks it, reads and signs its post orders, and is shown how we want reports written. During every shift, guards check in with our dispatch line, and supervisors visit sites in person. The full process is on our Our Guards page.

Licence, insurance and WSIB

Three things a buyer should see before signing. How to check each one yourself is on our Licensing and Insurance page.

Agency licence #30000322

Issued under the PSISA, 2005 and listed on Ontario’s public registry. Every guard also carries an individual licence.

Liability insurance

Ontario requires every licensed agency to carry at least $2,000,000 in general liability insurance under O. Reg. 462/07. We carry commercial general liability insurance.

WSIB coverage

Our guards are covered by WSIB. We do not post certificates online. Ask, and we send the certificate of insurance and our WSIB certificate before you sign.

How a new account starts

From first call to first shift, in five steps.

  1. You tell us about the site

The address, the hours you need covered and what has been going wrong. We reply the same business day.

  2. We agree the post

Duties, hours, reporting and a start date, set out before anyone is scheduled.

  3. We write the post orders

The guard assigned to you walks the property and signs them before the first shift.

  4. The guard starts

Usually within 24 to 48 hours for an ongoing post, or 1 to 2 hours when it is urgent.

  5. We cover the gaps

If a guard cannot make a shift, a licensed replacement is typically on site within 1 to 2 hours.

What we do not do

So you know where our work stops before you call.

No armed guards

Our guards do not carry firearms.

No private investigations

We do not take on investigation or surveillance-for-hire work.

No alarm or camera systems

We do not sell, install or monitor them. Our guards and patrols do respond to alarms on the sites we cover.

No cash-in-transit

We do not run armoured car or cash courier services. A retail guard can still walk your manager to the bank for a night deposit.

What you will not hear from us

We will not tell you we are the best or the number one security company in Hamilton. Nobody can prove that, and a buyer should not have to take it on trust.

  • A licence you can look up yourself
  • Insurance and WSIB certificates we will send
  • Guards who have been through the steps above
  • A phone line that is answered at 3 a.m.
