Construction Site Security Guards in Hamilton, Ontario
Uncompromising jobsite protection preventing heavy machinery theft, copper pilferage, vandalism, and unauthorized entry across Hamilton developments.
Typical Ontario rate: $28 – $45 / hour
What construction site security guards actually involves
Construction sites get hit for three things in Southern Ontario: copper, fuel, and anything with a serial number that fits in a pickup. The theft itself is rarely the expensive part. The expensive part is the crew standing around on Monday morning waiting for a replacement compressor, and the schedule slipping a week because of it.
The pattern we see over and over is that a site gets hit once, nobody changes anything, and the same people come back within a fortnight for whatever they had to leave behind. That second visit is entirely preventable, and it is usually the one that hurts.
What actually works is not complicated: somebody controlling the gate during working hours so you know who is on site, and unpredictable coverage overnight so nobody can time the gaps. The mistake is buying a fixed patrol at the same time every night, which is just publishing your schedule.
Active on jobsites across Hamilton — downtown residential towers, the Bayfront and industrial lands, West Harbour redevelopment, Mountain subdivisions — plus projects in Burlington, Stoney Creek, Ancaster, Brantford, Cambridge and Kitchener-Waterloo.
What gets taken off Ontario jobsites
Every sector has its own failure modes. These are the ones that come up repeatedly on the sites we cover, and what each one needs in response.
Copper and wiring theft
Stripped from partially built services, often by people who know exactly which stage of the build to target. Scrap value is a fraction of your replacement and delay cost.
Fuel siphoning
Plant and generators drained overnight. Cheap to steal, disproportionately disruptive because nothing runs in the morning.
Tools and small plant
Tool cribs, compressors, generators and power tools. Frequently an inside tip about what arrived that week.
Vandalism and arson
Graffiti, smashed glazing and deliberate fires. Timber-frame stages are a genuine total-loss risk.
Trespass and liability
Children and urban explorers on an unsecured site after dark. An injury on your site is your exposure regardless of how they got in.
Delivery and material shrink
Loads short on arrival and materials leaving on trucks nobody logged. Gate control is the only thing that catches this.
Why a fixed patrol time is worse than no patrol
A marked vehicle that arrives at 22:00, 01:00 and 04:00 every night is not deterrence. It is a published timetable of when the site is empty, and anyone watching for three nights has it.
Intervals are randomised, not rostered
Visit windows vary every night. The site is never unobserved for a predictable length of time, which is the only thing that actually deters a planned return.
Routes change direction and entry point
Officers do not walk the same circuit the same way. Somebody watching the site cannot work out where the blind side is.
Every visit is time stamped
You get proof the check happened, with times — which also means you can see for yourself that the schedule is genuinely irregular.
Coverage escalates after an incident
If a site gets hit, we move to continuous overnight cover for the following fortnight. That is the window the second visit happens in.
Ways to cover a jobsite
Most sites do not need the most expensive option. Work out which of these describes your situation and the conversation gets much shorter.
Gatehouse access control
Officer at the entrance during working hours logging trades, deliveries and visitors, and checking loads leaving site.
Best for: Active sites with heavy trade and delivery traffic
Overnight static guard
Continuous presence from site close to first trade arrival, with randomised interior and perimeter rounds.
Best for: High-value stages — mechanical, electrical rough-in, finishing
Randomised mobile patrol
Marked-vehicle attendance several times a night at irregular intervals, each visit time stamped.
Best for: Early-stage sites, or budgets that will not carry a full overnight post
Weekend and shutdown cover
Continuous coverage across long weekends and holiday shutdowns, when almost all serious site losses occur.
Best for: Any site going quiet for more than 48 hours
A night on an active construction site
Good security is mostly quiet and mostly routine — that is the point. Here is the shift, start to finish, so you know exactly what you are paying for.
-
06:30
Gate opens
Trades signed in against the day’s expected list. Anyone not on it is verified with the site super before entry.
-
10:00
Deliveries checked in
Loads matched to paperwork at the gate. Discrepancies raised the same morning, while the driver is still on site.
-
16:30
Site close and sweep
Headcount reconciled against sign-in, hot work areas checked, compound and cribs confirmed locked.
-
19:00 – 05:00
Randomised overnight rounds
Irregular interior and perimeter circuits with electronic checkpoint tagging. No two nights run the same route at the same times.
-
As needed
Fire watch during hot work or heating
Continuous patrols at code-required intervals while temporary heat or open flame is in use.
-
06:00
Report to the site super
Tours, gate log, deliveries and any incident in one document, in the super’s inbox before the first trade arrives.

What construction site security guards cost in Ontario
Most security sites will not put a number anywhere. Here is the honest range, and what would move your quote within it.
Construction posts sit in the standard unarmed band, with overnight, weekend and statutory hours carrying premium wage rates. Mobile patrol is quoted per documented check rather than hourly, which is usually the cheaper answer for early-stage sites.
These figures are a planning guide drawn from published Ontario market rates for licensed, insured, WSIB-covered personnel — not a quote. A price well below the band usually means someone is economising on wages, insurance or supervision, and that exposure transfers to you rather than staying with them.

What the post orders cover
Post orders are written for your site and approved by you before anybody is scheduled. This is the baseline they start from.
- Gatehouse Access Control: Verifying Subcontractor Deliveries and Logging Bill of Lading manifests
- Copper Wire, Pipe, Tool Compound, and Heavy Machinery Overnight Anti-Theft Watch
- Enforcing Mandatory Site Safety PPE Requirements (Hard Hats, High-Vis Vests, Steel-Toe Boots)
- Hourly Walking Perimeter Fence Inspections with NFC Checkpoint Verification
- Fire Watch Services During Hot-Work Cutting, Welding, and Roofing Bitumen Operations
- Deterring Urban Explorers, Vandals, and Trespassers under the Trespass to Property Act
- Preventing Illegal Dumping of Demolition Debris and Contaminated Materials
- Digital Shift Handover Reports with Timestamped High-Definition Site Photos
The rules this service operates under
Security in Ontario is regulated, and the specific legislation differs by sector. These are the ones that shape how this post is run.
Private Security and Investigative Services Act
Agency and individual licensing, uniform standards, and the limits on what a guard may lawfully do when they find someone on site.
Occupational Health and Safety Act
Construction projects regulation — our officers hold Working at Heights awareness where required and follow your site-specific orientation, not a generic one.
Ontario Fire Code
Hot work, temporary heating and open-flame operations trigger fire watch obligations. Many sites need this and do not realise it until an inspection.
Trespass to Property Act
How notice is served and documented so a repeat trespasser can actually be dealt with rather than simply escorted off again.

Five minutes of prep gets you a real quote instead of a range
We can give you a considered number on the first call if you have these to hand. If you do not, that is fine too — we will walk the site with you and work it out together.
- Current build stage, and what is on site right now worth taking
- Number of gates and whether the perimeter hoarding is intact
- Site lighting after dark — usually the cheapest thing to improve
- Any previous incidents, and what was taken
- Whether hot work or temporary heating is in use
Questions we get asked about construction site security guards
Straight answers on licensing, deployment timing and how the contract actually works.
How do guards protect construction materials like copper wire and generators at night?
Our overnight guards utilize tactical flashlights, thermal imaging equipment, and systematic random walking tours to inspect material lockups, tool trailers, and equipment compounds. High-visibility static guard presence combined with marked mobile patrol visits provides maximum deterrence.
Can your guards manage delivery trucks and material gate access during working hours?
Yes. Our daytime gatehouse guards log incoming subcontractor vehicles, check driver identification against approved vendor manifests, inspect cargo upon exit, and ensure trucks adhere to site speed and designated staging lanes.
Do you provide temporary guard shacks or heating for cold Canadian winters?
Yes. For undeveloped greenfield sites without electricity or trailers, we supply self-contained mobile guard shelters equipped with generators, heating, and exterior floodlighting.
Does a security guard replace the fence around a construction site?
No. Ontario’s construction regulation, O. Reg. 213/91, section 65, requires a sturdy fence at least 1.8 metres high between the project and a public way if the work may endanger people using it. A guard adds someone to watch that fence, report damage and deal with people who get past it, but your fencing duty stays in place.
Do no-trespassing signs on a site count as legal notice?
They can. Under the Trespass to Property Act, notice can be given by signs clearly visible in daylight from the approach to each ordinary point of access. So check every gate, not only the main one. A person who is on the site without permission can also be directed to leave by the occupier or someone the occupier authorizes, such as our guard.
Should we book an overnight guard or a mobile patrol?
It depends on the build stage and what is on site. Early-stage sites with little worth taking can often use irregular patrol visits, which cost less. Once copper, finishes or expensive tools arrive, a continuous overnight guard usually makes more sense. You can move from one to the other as the job progresses.
We were just broken into. How fast can you get a guard to the site?
Call dispatch, which is answered 24/7. Urgent requests are typically staffed within 1 to 2 hours, depending on location and road conditions. We usually suggest continuous overnight cover for about two weeks after a break-in, because that is when thieves tend to come back for whatever they left behind.
Can we book security only for a holiday shutdown?
Yes. Short-term cover is common for long weekends and holiday shutdowns, and for any site going quiet for more than 48 hours. Give us the dates early, especially for the Christmas break, along with the site address and the gate access details.
How much do construction site security guards cost?
Static posts generally run $28 to $45 an hour, with premium wage rates for overnight, weekend and statutory hours. Mobile patrol is quoted per documented check instead of hourly and is usually cheaper for early-stage sites.
