The short version

What event security services actually involves

Event security is almost entirely won or lost before the doors open. By the time a crowd is inside, your staffing numbers, your entry plan and your exit routes are fixed — the team can only work within whatever was decided weeks earlier.

The two things that most often go wrong are both planning failures. Entry is under-resourced, so a queue builds outside and people arrive irritated before anything has even started. Or alcohol service was planned without anyone thinking through what the last forty minutes look like, which is when nearly every event incident actually happens.

Most organisers come to us because a venue or insurer has asked for licensed guards and a certificate of insurance. That is the paperwork. The useful part is sitting down with your run sheet and working out where the pressure points are.

Event coverage across Hamilton — FirstOntario Centre and Concert Hall, Bayfront and Gage Park festivals, Tim Hortons Field, banquet halls, breweries and campus venues — plus events in Burlington, Grimsby, St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Brantford and Waterloo Region.

The question every organiser asks first

How many guards does your event actually need?

There is no single ratio that works, and anyone who gives you one over the phone without asking about your event is guessing. These are the factors that genuinely move the number.

Attendance is the starting point, not the answer

A seated 500-person dinner and a 500-person standing show need completely different teams. Format matters more than headcount.

Alcohol changes everything

Licensed events need more officers, weighted heavily toward the final hour and the exit. This is the single biggest multiplier.

Entry points and the arrival curve

Every door needs staffing, and a crowd that all arrives in twenty minutes needs more lanes than the same crowd arriving over two hours.

The venue may already have a minimum

Many venues and insurers set a required ratio as a condition of booking. Check before planning — it is often the binding number.

Duration and call-out minimums

Short events still carry a minimum shift length per officer, which is worth knowing before you compare quotes.

The real risks

What goes wrong at events

Every sector has its own failure modes. These are the ones that come up repeatedly on the sites we cover, and what each one needs in response.

Entry queue build-up

Under-staffed doors create a crowd outside your control before the event has started. Almost always a planning number, not a staff performance issue.

Alcohol-related incidents

Concentrated in the final hour and at the exit. Service policy and security staffing have to be planned together or neither works.

Unauthorised entry

Fence jumping, duplicated wristbands, and back-of-house doors propped by staff and crew.

Crowd movement and egress

Exit capacity is the single most important safety number at any event and the one most often assumed rather than calculated.

Medical and emergency access

Emergency routes blocked by vendors, parking or the crowd itself. Checked before doors and maintained throughout.

Artist, VIP and back-of-house control

Credential discipline backstage, and keeping the wrong people out of the right rooms.

Coverage options

Event staffing options

Most sites do not need the most expensive option. Work out which of these describes your situation and the conversation gets much shorter.

Entry and ticket screening

Door team handling ID, ticket and bag checks at a throughput rate matched to your expected arrival curve.

Best for: Ticketed events with a defined start time

Crowd management team

Floor and perimeter officers monitoring density, movement and behaviour throughout the event.

Best for: Concerts, festivals, sporting events

Licensed-premises cover

Officers positioned for alcohol service environments, with emphasis on the final hour and exit dispersal.

Best for: Bars, banquet halls, licensed functions

Overnight asset protection

Coverage of staging, equipment, vendor stock and site infrastructure between event days.

Best for: Multi-day festivals, trade shows, conferences

Behind the uniform

How an event is run, from planning to load-out

Good security is mostly quiet and mostly routine — that is the point. Here is the shift, start to finish, so you know exactly what you are paying for.

  1. T-14 days

Plan built from your run sheet

Expected attendance, arrival curve, licensed areas and exit routes reviewed. Staffing numbers come out of that, not a rule of thumb.

  2. T-3 hours

    Site walk and team briefing

Every officer walks the venue, is briefed on their position, and knows the exits and medical points before anyone arrives.

  3. Doors

    Entry throughput managed

Screening rate matched to the queue so the line keeps moving. Extra lanes opened rather than letting a crowd build.

  4. During

    Density and behaviour monitoring

Floor and perimeter positions watching movement, pressure points and anyone struggling, with radio contact throughout.

  5. Final hour

    Highest-risk window

Staffing weighted to the end of alcohol service and the exit, which is where the large majority of event incidents occur.

  6. Egress

    Dispersal and sweep

Crowd moved off safely, venue swept for stragglers and left property, incident log closed with the organiser.

Straight answer on price

What event security services cost in Ontario

Most security sites will not put a number anywhere. Here is the honest range, and what would move your quote within it.

Typical 2026 Ontario range $30 – $50 / hour

Event work prices above the base band because it is short-duration, weekend-weighted and often requires crowd management training. Expect a minimum call-out length per officer. Multi-day events and repeat bookings price materially better than one-offs.

These figures are a planning guide drawn from published Ontario market rates for licensed, insured, WSIB-covered personnel — not a quote. A price well below the band usually means someone is economising on wages, insurance or supervision, and that exposure transfers to you rather than staying with them.

Standard duties

What the post orders cover

Compliance framework

The rules this service operates under

Security in Ontario is regulated, and the specific legislation differs by sector. These are the ones that shape how this post is run.

Private Security and Investigative Services Act

Every officer at your event holds a current Ontario guard licence. Venues and insurers will ask for the numbers, and we provide them up front.

Liquor Licence and Control Act

Where alcohol is served, officers work to the licence conditions — entry age verification, intoxication refusal and service end times.

Ontario Fire Code — occupant load

Posted capacity is a legal limit, not a target. Counting at the door is how it is actually maintained.

Certificate of insurance

Venues require proof of commercial general liability and WSIB coverage before they will confirm. We issue this at booking rather than on the day.

Before you call

Five minutes of prep gets you a real quote instead of a range

We can give you a considered number on the first call if you have these to hand. If you do not, that is fine too — we will walk the site with you and work it out together.

  • Venue, expected attendance and whether it is ticketed
  • Doors, start and end times, and your expected arrival curve
  • Whether alcohol is served, and when service ends
  • Any VIP, artist or back-of-house areas needing credential control
  • What the venue or your insurer has specifically asked for in writing
Common questions

Questions we get asked about event security services

Straight answers on licensing, deployment timing and how the contract actually works.

Do your event security guards possess Smart Serve certification?

Yes. For events serving alcohol, our guards hold valid Smart Serve Ontario certifications to monitor consumption, prevent underage drinking, and ensure liquor is not carried outside licensed boundaries.

How many security guards do I need for my event?

No provincial law sets one ratio for every event. The number usually comes from the venue contract, your insurer, City of Hamilton event approvals and, for some liquor permits, AGCO conditions. On City property, Hamilton’s Municipal Alcohol Policy sets minimum event worker numbers by guest count. Above those minimums, we plan from your run sheet: attendance, format, entrances, arrival time and when alcohol service ends.

Can volunteers work the door instead of licensed guards?

Not when the venue, your insurer or a permit asks for licensed security. Volunteers can help with tickets and directions, but they do not count toward a licensed security requirement. Every officer we send holds an individual Ontario security guard licence, and we give you the numbers in advance.

Will you provide a certificate of insurance for the venue?

Yes. Most venues ask for proof of commercial general liability and WSIB coverage before they confirm a booking. We send it when you book, so you are not chasing paperwork on the day.

How far ahead should we book event security?

Two weeks or more, because that leaves time to plan from your run sheet and fix entry or exit problems on paper. We can staff at shorter notice, and scheduled coverage typically starts within 24 to 48 hours, but late bookings leave less room to plan.

When are incidents most likely at an event?

In the final hour, especially at licensed events. That is when alcohol service ends and the crowd heads for the exits together. We put more officers on the end of service and the exit rather than spreading them evenly across the night.

Do your guards search bags at the entrance?

Yes, if you set a bag policy. Officers check bags and can use handheld metal detectors at entry. It works best when the rules are printed on the ticket or event page, so people arrive prepared and the line keeps moving.

How much does event security cost?

Event officers generally run $30 to $50 an hour. Event work sits above the base guard rate because shifts are short, weighted to weekends and often need crowd management training. Each officer carries a minimum call-out length. Multi-day events and repeat bookings price better than one-off events.
