Fire watch is the one service where the clock genuinely starts the moment you phone. Under the Ontario Fire Code, when a fire alarm or sprinkler system is out of service, patrols have to begin immediately — not in the morning, not when the contractor returns.
Most of these calls reach us between four and seven in the evening, usually from a property manager who has just been told by a fire inspector or an alarm technician that the building needs a watch tonight. What documentation do municipal Fire Inspectors require during a Fire Watch?
Fire Inspectors require an uninterrupted Fire Watch Logsheet documenting every patrol round with specific timestamps, floor numbers, officer signatures, and notes on life safety equipment. Can Fire Watch guards perform other security duties while on duty?
We do not combine them. A fire watch only works if every round is finished on time, so the officer on watch is not also running the front desk, parcels or access control. If you need a guard for those jobs as well, we staff it as a separate post.
Who do we have to notify when the fire alarm or sprinklers are shut down?
Under the Ontario Fire Code, when a fire alarm system or a sprinkler system, or any part of one, is shut down, the fire department, the building occupants and your supervisory staff must be notified. A sprinkler impairment lasting more than 24 hours also requires notice to the Chief Fire Official. Those calls are the owner’s to make. Booking a watch does not replace them.
How often does the officer patrol the building?
Usually every 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the building and the occupancy. If the fire department or inspector gives you an interval, we use theirs. Each round covers every floor, stairwell and service room, and goes into the log with the time it was finished.
How long does the fire watch have to stay on?
Until the system is back in service. The Fire Code requires your fire safety plan to set out alternative measures for occupant safety during a shutdown, so check what yours says. When the contractor confirms the system is restored, we record the stand-down time and give you the full log for your fire safety file.
Does hot work need a fire watch?
Often, but the rule usually comes from your insurer or the general contractor rather than a fixed Fire Code period. The Code requires combustibles to be kept at least 15 m from hot work or shielded, and at least one portable extinguisher in the work area. It also requires the fire safety plan to be revised with temporary measures before construction starts. Check your policy and site rules for the watch period, and we will staff it.
What should we have ready when the officer arrives?
Keys or fobs for every floor, stairwell and service room, a copy of the fire safety plan, and a site contact who answers at night. Tell us which system is down and what interval was set. The officer walks the route with your representative first, so they know where the pull stations and extinguishers are before the first round.
