The short version

Four documents stand behind every StandBy post. Each one can be checked without taking our word for it.

Agency licence

#30000322, private security agency licence under the PSISA, 2005.

Guard licences

Each guard holds an individual Ontario security guard licence.

Liability insurance

Commercial general liability, at or above Ontario’s $2,000,000 minimum for agencies.

WSIB

Registered and covered. Clearance certificate sent on request.

Our agency licence

In Ontario, any business that sells the services of security guards needs an agency licence from the Ministry of the Solicitor General. The rule comes from the Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005. Ours is licence #30000322, held by Standby Security Services Inc. and run from our office at 175 Catharine St S in Hamilton.

The licence is not permanent. Agency licences are renewed every three years, and each renewal needs a valid certificate of general liability insurance. A lapsed licence means the agency cannot legally sell guard services, so check the status, not just the number.

How to check it yourself

  1. Open Ontario’s private security and investigative services page and choose the public registry for agency licences.
  2. Search by licence number, 30000322, or by legal business name, Standby Security Services Inc.
  3. Confirm the status shows the licence as valid.

It takes about two minutes and needs no account. Do the same for any company you are comparing us with.

Guard licences are separate

An agency licence covers the business. It does not cover the person standing at your gate. Every guard working in Ontario needs an individual security guard licence, and every guard we send has one. When we replace an absent guard, the replacement is licensed too.

Ask us for the licence numbers of the guards assigned to your site. Individual licences are searched on the same registry by their 6 to 8 digit number. Property managers often keep these numbers on file with the post orders, which makes a later audit simple. For how we screen and train guards, see Our Guards.

  • Guard licence number6 to 8 digits, on the same registry

Insurance and WSIB

Both are sent on request rather than posted here. Policy details change at each renewal, and a copy downloaded from a website can be out of date.

Liability insurance

We carry commercial general liability insurance. For a security agency it is a condition of the licence: O. Reg. 462/07 requires every licensed agency to carry general liability insurance of at least $2,000,000.

We send a certificate of insurance on request. It names the insurer, the policy period and our current limit. If your landlord, condo corporation or general contractor needs a certain name or wording on the certificate, tell us when you ask for a quote, before the first shift.

WSIB coverage

The guards we send are our employees, and we carry Workplace Safety and Insurance Board coverage for them. That is our account to keep in good standing, not yours.

The proof is a WSIB clearance certificate, which shows a business is registered and in good standing. Clearances are valid for up to 90 days, so on a long contract ask for a fresh one each quarter. We send ours on request, and you can also find it yourself through WSIB’s quick access clearances service without opening an account.

Before you sign with any security company

Ask for these four items. A licensed agency should be able to produce all of them, and so should anyone you are comparing us with.

Tick each one off as you receive it.

Licensing and Insurance Questions

Answers to common questions regarding deployment, licensing, and procedures.

What is StandBy Security's licence number?

Our private security agency licence number is #30000322, issued under Ontario's Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005. You can confirm its status on ServiceOntario's public registry by searching the licence number or our legal name, Standby Security Services Inc.

Are your security guards licensed individually?

Yes. Every guard we send holds their own Ontario security guard licence, separate from the agency licence. Ask us for the licence numbers of the guards assigned to your site and look each one up on the same registry by its 6 to 8 digit number.

How much liability insurance does a security company in Ontario need?

At least $2,000,000 in general liability insurance. O. Reg. 462/07 under the Private Security and Investigative Services Act sets that minimum for every licensed agency, and an agency must show a valid certificate to renew its licence. Our certificate of insurance lists the insurer and our current limit, and we send it on request.

Can I get a certificate of insurance before the contract starts?

Yes. Ask when you request a quote or before the first shift, and tell us if your landlord, condo corporation or general contractor needs a particular name on it. We send the current certificate rather than posting one online, because the details change at each renewal.

How do I check that a security company is covered by WSIB?

Ask the company for a WSIB clearance certificate, or look it up yourself with WSIB's quick access clearances service, which needs no account. A clearance is valid for up to 90 days, so check that the date covers the work. We provide ours on request.

What should I ask for before hiring a security company?

Four things: the agency licence number, the licence numbers of the guards who will work your site, a current certificate of insurance and a WSIB clearance. A licensed agency should be able to produce all four. Call (289) 309-3633 to request ours.

Need our documents for a tender or a board?

Tell us who needs them and where to send them. We will email the certificate of insurance and WSIB clearance along with your quote.
