Commercial Security Guard Services in Hamilton & Ontario
Integrated security solutions for multi-tenant office complexes, corporate campuses, industrial warehouses, and manufacturing plants.
Typical Ontario rate: $28 – $45 / hour
What commercial security services actually involves
Commercial security covers a lot of ground — office towers, industrial compounds, warehouses, plazas, self-storage — and the honest answer is that almost none of those sites need the same thing. What they have in common is an insurer, a landlord or a head office asking who controls the property after hours, and no satisfying answer.
Most commercial buyers start by asking for a guard. Often that is not the right first purchase. If the real problem is a yard that gets walked through twice a month, randomised patrol visits cost a fraction of a static post and solve it. If the problem is a lobby anyone can enter during business hours, the answer is a staffed desk, not overnight coverage.
We would rather spend an hour on site working out which of those you actually have than sell you eight hours a night you do not need.
Commercial coverage across Hamilton’s Bayfront and industrial lands, the Stoney Creek and Ancaster business parks, downtown office towers and Upper James plazas, extending to Burlington, Brantford, Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo.
What commercial properties lose, and how
Every sector has its own failure modes. These are the ones that come up repeatedly on the sites we cover, and what each one needs in response.
After-hours entry to yards and compounds
Fencing and cameras record it; they do not stop it. Anything stored outside is exposed the moment the last vehicle leaves.
Loading dock and inventory shrink
Loads short on arrival, stock leaving on unlogged vehicles. Without gate control nobody reconciles it until a stock count months later.
Disgruntled departures
Terminations and layoffs are the highest-risk access events most businesses face, and usually the least planned for.
Vandalism and squatting
Vacant units and low-traffic frontages attract graffiti, break-ins and encampments that become expensive and sensitive to resolve.
False alarm attendance costs
Repeat false activations drain staff goodwill and can attract municipal charges. A guard verifying on site beats a manager driving in at 3 a.m.
Labour disruption and protest
Access control at a picketed entrance needs neutrality and documentation, not confrontation.
Static guard or mobile patrol? An honest comparison
This is the decision that determines most of your security budget, and the answer depends almost entirely on whether your risk is continuous or intermittent.
A static post buys presence
Somebody is there the whole time. That matters when people, vehicles or stock move through the site, or when the deterrent value of a visible uniform is the point.
A mobile patrol buys coverage
Several documented checks a night at unpredictable times. For a fenced yard that is empty from six to six, this catches almost everything a static post would, at a fraction of the cost.
Mobile patrol has a real gap
Between visits, nobody is there. If your loss risk is something that takes four minutes, patrol will not reliably stop it and we will tell you so.
Most portfolios end up with both
A static post at the site that needs presence, patrol across everything else. Mixing the two is normally where the budget actually balances.
Ways to cover a commercial property
Most sites do not need the most expensive option. Work out which of these describes your situation and the conversation gets much shorter.
Static site guard
Continuous presence at a gate, lobby or compound with scheduled internal and perimeter rounds.
Best for: Sites with people, vehicles or stock moving through them
Randomised mobile patrol
Marked-vehicle checks at irregular intervals through the night, every visit time stamped.
Best for: Yards, vacant units, multi-site portfolios
Alarm response attendance
A licensed officer attends and verifies an activation instead of a manager or key-holder driving in at night.
Best for: Any site with recurring false alarms
Lock-up and open service
Short scheduled shifts covering securing the site at close and opening it at start of business.
Best for: Plazas and multi-tenant commercial buildings

What commercial security services cost in Ontario
Most security sites will not put a number anywhere. Here is the honest range, and what would move your quote within it.
Standard unarmed band for static posts, with premium rates on overnight, weekend and statutory hours. Mobile patrol and alarm response are quoted per attendance, which is normally far cheaper than staffing hours you do not need.
These figures are a planning guide drawn from published Ontario market rates for licensed, insured, WSIB-covered personnel — not a quote. A price well below the band usually means someone is economising on wages, insurance or supervision, and that exposure transfers to you rather than staying with them.

Five minutes of prep gets you a real quote instead of a range
We can give you a considered number on the first call if you have these to hand. If you do not, that is fine too — we will walk the site with you and work it out together.
- Site footprint, number of buildings and access points
- What is stored outside overnight, and its replacement value
- Alarm and CCTV systems in place, and who currently responds
- Any recent incidents, and how they were discovered
- Whether you need coverage every night or only weekends and shutdowns
Questions we get asked about commercial security services
Straight answers on licensing, deployment timing and how the contract actually works.
How do your guards monitor after-hours access for office workers?
Our guards maintain electronic logs of all employees entering or exiting outside regular business hours. Personnel must tap their authorized keycards and show identification upon request, preventing unauthorized guests or former employees from accessing company suites.
Can you secure loading docks and shipping areas?
Yes. Loading dock officers verify driver shipping orders, check driver photo ID, record trailer license plates, inspect container bolt seals, and supervise unloading to prevent cargo theft and unauthorized building access.
Do we need a full-time guard or would a mobile patrol do?
Ask whether your risk is continuous or occasional. If people, vehicles or stock move through the site, a static post makes sense. If the site is a fenced yard that sits empty from six to six, several irregular patrol visits a night can cover it for much less. Patrol leaves gaps between visits, and many portfolios end up using both.
Do you install or monitor alarms and cameras?
No. We do not sell, install or monitor alarm or camera systems. We send a guard to respond to alarms. Your monitoring company calls us, and an officer attends so a manager does not have to drive in at night. If you need a system put in, your alarm company is the right call.
Do you provide armed security guards?
No, StandBy Security does not provide armed guards. Our commercial officers rely on visible presence, access control, reporting and de-escalation, and they call police when a situation needs them.
What can a guard do about someone trespassing on our property?
Under the Trespass to Property Act, an occupier or someone authorized by the occupier can direct a person to leave, and the person must leave immediately. The Act also allows an authorized person to arrest someone they believe, on reasonable and probable grounds, is there in contravention of it. Our guards follow your site instructions, record what happened and call local police when needed.
Our landlord asked for proof of insurance. Can you provide it?
Yes. We carry commercial general liability insurance that meets the $2,000,000 minimum in O. Reg. 462/07, and we have WSIB coverage. Tell us what name the landlord or property manager needs on the certificate. We send the certificate of insurance and a WSIB clearance on request.
How much do commercial security guards cost per hour?
Static commercial posts generally run $28 to $45 an hour, with premium rates on overnight, weekend and statutory hours. Mobile patrol and alarm response are quoted per attendance, which is often cheaper than paying for hours you do not need. A site walk gives you a firm number.
